Messerschmitt Me 323 – The Largest Land Based Transport Aircraft of WW2

During the World War II, the German military created an aircraft unlike anything seen before. It was the Messerschmitt Me 323 Gigant (“Giant”).

This huge six-engined transport was developed from the Me 321 glider. The Giant entered service in late 1942 in the Middle East.

It was the largest land-based transport aircraft of the entire war. The impressive cargo carrier boasted 6 engines with counter-rotating propellers. Also its enormous wingspan was over 180-feet.

It could airlift 130 troops or over 25,000 pounds of payload. Also, it was used for transport of vehicles including tanks.

The Me 323 primarily served the Deutsches Afrika Korps and the German Eastern Front.

Unfortunately none of them survived the war. During the service each and every last one of them fell to enemy fire.
