Su-34 ‘Fullback’ – From Production Line To Active Duty

A short movie about Sukhoi Su-34 Fullback showing footage showing the path from the production line to active duty.

The Su-34 shares most of its wing structure, tail, and engine nacelles with the older Sukhoi model Su-27 Flanker. It is powered by a pair of Saturn AL-31FM1 turbofan engines, the same engines used on the Su-27SM, providing the Fullback with a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 when fully loaded. With a full weapons load, the Su-34 has a maximum range of 2,500 mi (4,000 kilometers) without refueling.

Compared to other members of the Sukhoi Su-27 family, the Su-34 Fullback has an entirely new forward fuselage with an armored cockpit providing side-by-side seating for a crew of two, and the flattened nosecone earned it the nickname “Duckling” or the “Duckbill”.

The Sukhoi Su-34 has 12 hardpoints for 17,600–26,500 lb (8,000–12,000 kg) of latest precision-guided weapons, bombs and rockets. Aircraft is fitted with a 30 mm GSh-30-1 cannon and the ability to carry up to six R-77 and R-73 air-to-air missiles.
